I’m proud that I’m an ABC because I know two languages when I feel I am an American. When I am in a public place, I can use Chinese to express my feelings rather than letting everyone know what I am saying.

The problem is that our parents were not born in America, and they don’t know what it’s like to be around Americans. Therefore, we do not know much about the knowledge of being Americans since it was not passed down by our parents.

Thanks for letting us use English.

(I’m nice enough to say that Teacher Lin is considerate of our feelings :) )

  2. SwordsMaster Says:

Like patsfan (I wonder who that is…), I am also proud of being an ABC because my classmates have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about. I fell special. (not in a bad sort of way) Most of my friends actually want to learn Chinese. Some of friends don’t even know what ABC means. Ha!

However, being ABC does have its disadvantages. Some people will make fun of you because of that. I’ve experienced a LOT of racism at my school. But sometimes it isn’t a problem because some people don’t know if I’m Chinese of Japanese!

Thanks for letting us use English. Again. :D

  3. SwordsMaster Says:

I need to correct myself. My classmates don’t know what I’m saying in Chinese. Sorry! :(
Also, people also make fun of me by saying stuff that is considered stereotypical Chinese. Such as: Ching-Chong!
Those people get on my nerves.

  4. ^o^ Says:

I have the same feeling as SwordsMaster and PatsFan. I’m proud to be an ABC person and at the same time I feel being an ABC person gives you disadvantages. For example you might have prople making fun of you like listed above.

Some advantages of being ABC is you are mad at someone you can say something in chinese and they won’t understand you ( just kidding) but I did it before. I also feel special because a couple days ago one of my friends asked me what 福 ment and people started wanting me to write words because they think it’s cool and intresting ( I guess), because it’s a totally differant thing then spanish or english, etc.

Thanks for letting us use english or else I would’ve never been able to write my thoughts! :-)

Like Patsfan, Swordmaster, and ^o^, I am proud to be a ABC, to know two different languages, but sometimes at school, people doesn’t include me and other ABC’s because they think we’re different from them. Since my parents aren’t ABC’s, my family doesn’t know much of any American traditions. Then, I feel really different from other people.
But most of the times, it feels great to be an ABC. I can comunicate with my friends without letting everyone know what I am talking about. When my friends have a fortune cookie, they test me on the words. When I get one correct, my friends always congrats me. I am really proud of being an ABC even though there is a bad side to it too!
( Thanks for letting us use English!!!! :D )

  6. Magic_Poodle Says:

Just like all the other people (above) to be an American born Chinese, is something that I take pride in. Being American and Chinese I can share in traditions of both of these cultures. Being an ABC allows to learn two different languages at an early age, an oppurtunity most other children do not have. Perhasps, there is a bad side to this, that I may be made fun of or teased. Yet, many people in my English school are ABCs, so it doesn’t really matter. Being an ABC is great, as we have both the traditional Chinese blood in our veins and the American spirit in our hearts. To be an ABC is something that I am proud of, simply because of the oppurtunity it gives me to learn both American and Chinese ways.

Technically………..yeah, same as the others. I’m proud…blah blah blah…because I know THREE! yeah THREE languages and in public, I can diss others in public without them knowing and then I can also diss my friends that know mandarin with some crafty cantonese! yay……im done. Thanks for letting us use English too.

  8. KillerAZNMidget101 Says:

O yeah, my parents are’nt to familiar with American ways so sometimes it is odd when we discuss what we do. But this gives me an opporrtunity for me to learn about their old culture.

Unlike others, for me the stereotypes are a good thing. For one, people automatically believe that Asians are smart. Also, people don’t tease me because my Asianness is too great for them. If a problem ever arises, I will correct the problem with my azn powers, physically… Besides, I do not feel special as an Asian or worse in any way as in our school, we have an over energetic health teacher who takes 1/4 of the school year to straighten out any stereotypes that one might have. Remember, be strong and… well, what is anyone else gonna do about it? When someone is not included, help them out, you may yet become good friends, and when you’re the odd man out, those people will be there for you. Also, as an ABC, English is my first language so when a chance comes where I can avoid Chinese, I take it!

    Now…..
here is my chicken of doom

Unlike the others I do not take pride in being ABC. I think of it as neither good nor bad. There are advantages and disadvantages of it. Advantages are that you are able to understand how both cultures and both languages are, and you can understand them both. You can participate in both kind of activities. There are jokes about misunderstandings of languages that you are also able to understand. In addition you can also speak to many more people with different languages. On the other hand like others have said already there are many people that stereotype against you and think of you differently. People believe that if your Chinese than you must be very smart and that there can be no exceptions. If you are not as smart, and are regular they think that your dumb. They also think that you are obsessed with being smart and only care about school, homework, and grades. Also there are some people that use the words like “Asian” and “Chinese” as insult towards others (usually not other ABC people). It hurts others quite horribly(if you ask me that is). Now that I have listed some of my thoughts, I repeat I do not know if I would rather be ABC or not. I think it would be a hard decision if I could decide if I would like to change. I would be missing a lot if I were not ABC, but if I had a choice and was able to not be ABC and didn’t take the chance, then I would ponder upon if I’d made the right decision evermore. In a way I would not want that kind of decision for I would go out of my mind if I had to make that sort of decision..
Thank you for allowing us to use English. Your thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated!

Being an abc has always been a part of myself that I am proud of. As everyone else has already mentioned, there are some advantages and disadvantages. The advantages might include being able to speak, write, and read in another language fluently, being exposed to another culture, and especially since we all live in a mainly white community, it shows everyone that we are different, unique. The disadvantages might include being teased or mimicked at school, being judged stereotypically, or just being…different than everyone else around you. Being an abc, we’ve all felt left out or looked down upon before, but fortunately for myself, I show an effort to fit in, to interact with others; and I’ve changed their stereotypical thinking about abcs, or chinese and asian people in general. While others may be in a community of people who are mean, and like to tease, I am very lucky to be surrounded by people whom I’ve been able to change over months and years. They look at me as just another friend, another classmate. Usually, instead of looking down at me, they look up; “you know how to speak chinese? THATS SO COOL!!” “say something in chinese!!” “whoa you are so lucky!” I consider myself to be very lucky to have something that my friends dont, to know something even my teachers dont. I think of it as a privelege to be different than everyone else, and through it all, through being an abc, I have learned how to live life with a few people still thinking they are better than you, and how to prove them otherwise. And so now, whenever I happen to catch someone gazing at me with that “eww-look-at-that-chinese-girl-over-there” look, I just smile back; because I am unique.

    And I am proud.

(thank you Teacher Lin for letting us express our thoughts and emotions in English; it helps us greatly to communicate our feelings in a way that we usually arent able to in Chinese =] )

OMG!!!! azndancer ur essay is so touching. well, i luv being an abc because i luv being chinese!!!!!! but like what some other people said before me….there are some disadvantages and advantages being an abc. Like i hate being made fun of in school even if they are joking. and there jokes involve a lot of racism. but i like being chinese cuz in my school there aren’t many asians (like 4 not including all da lil kids, which would make 11). haha i luv saying things in chinese with the chinese kids at my school cuz everybody would be like “WHOA!!!!! Can you teach me chinese?”

it also fun knowing how to speak 2 different languages :XD

all i can say is I LUV BEING CHINESE!!!!! WOOOOOO!!!!

    P.S.
killeraznmidget-whats with all da dead n fat bunnies?
are they 4 easter or something?

  13. Link 0wnz Says:

I completely agree with everyone else above. Provided the fact that I speak 4 languages. Ha Killeraznmidget!!!
Yea, but still, I mean being an ABC is good and bad.
Good? People ask me how to write or say so-n-so in Cantonese or Mandarin. I’m actually teaching kids at my school how to speak Chinese. And remember, being ABC means I can see 2 completely different cultures, and some people appreciate that.
Statements such as: “Do you use chopsticks?”, “Were you born in China?”, “Have you ever been to China?” have been said and they like my answers. As Killeraznmidget said, I can also diss my priends in public without anyone knowing what I’m saying.
Bad? Those dang racist noobs out there think they’re so cool ’cause they call us “banana” and “(cannot be stated)”. Also, like Swordsmater, some idiots say stereotypical Chinese languages; they most popular one in 8th grade is:
“Ching chong mukahaya” I really wish those kinds of people would shut up.
Thank you teacher, for letting us use English, ’cause I might have been dead by now if I had to write this in Chinese.
    Asians own!

PS-I hope you all know what (cannot be stated) is…

I love being an ABC, and I am proud of it. Just like everyone else, there is always racism floating around when you are asian and you live in a mostly white coummunity. But whenever I get teased by racists, I always ignore their pointless and stupid jokes and show them that being an ABC is COOL! But some there are also people who want to be chinese, but they aren’t. People in my class always want me to teach them chiense and it makes me proud to be and abc.
