2006-11-06 Q: Our daughter is currently in
the 9th and will be graduting from the LCS in June. We would love to have our
daughter continue her Chinese eduction at LCS if more senior Chinese classes
(9th to 12th grades) can be offered. Since there are currently more than 20
students in the graduating 8th grade at LCS, we believe there should be enough
interest from the current 8th grade students who like to continue their Chinese
education at LCS. Can we ask both 8th grade teachers to kindly run a quick
survey in their classes to determine student interest? If there is enough
interest from more than certain number of students, would LCS consider seriously
extend the grade level to 9th grade and beyond? We would like to thank all the
LCS staff for their great efforts, support & dedication.
A: (James Chuang, Principal)
A bit confused from you comments. My guessing you meant new classes for 10th
grade and beyond. This quest has been brought up last year too. What you believe
is one thing what is the reality is another thing. Believe or not, last year
only heard 5, may be 6, students are interested in 10th grade. There are many
factors involved too, the goal, cost, and resources. Resources like classrooms,
teachers, and teaching materials. I'll bring your question to the board meeting
on 4/29 for more discussion.

not finalized. Questions:

laptops? A:
(annotations in non-black font -- James Chuang, Principal)
報名應注意事項:
①使用注音輸入法或拼音輸入法?
②是否能自備電腦
【自備電腦者,需在考前先至http://www.iqchinese.com下載
IQChinese Quiz】
2. What input methods and software
are allowed?
Microsoft Pinyin IME (Hanyu Pinyin) & Microsoft New Phonetic IME (Zhunyin
Fuhao) zhuyin is
the default method taught in the class while pinyin is the option.
Those two methods are
based on the input requirements of Chinese AP course description of College
Board.
3. IQChinese Quiz is not
freeware. How can we use it more than the 2-week trial period?
We are still evaluating IQChinese Quiz. We are also contacting IQ
Technology for a possibility of discount price and/or a group license. In case
we decide to go for it.

2006-10-02 Q: I understand that the website is mainly is Chinese.
However, it must be noted that quite a few parents of
children in the bilingual class are not fluent enough
in Chinese to read the newsletter (if they were, their children would probably
be in the regular Chinese class). It would be helpful if the website were
a resource for all parents. Also,
last year you had a bilingual parent meeting last year. Will there be one
this year? (same problem for some of the parents of children in the
bilingual classes)
A: LCS Webmaster -- Thanks
for the comments that help shape our school community. I am forwarding the
"bilingual parent meeting" question to Qiuming, the
Director of Bilingual Class. As requested by him, the
bilingual class now has its own web session inside the
語文課Classes on the LCS
main page. As to the Newsletter, I am a bit puzzled. The Newsletter has
always been posted both in Chinese and English. It can be switched back and
forth on the
Newsletter page, by clicking either ·本期通訊 or
·Current
Newsletter. The last
year's Newsletters are accessible in both languages as well, by clicking/select
either 過期 or "Back Issues." Please do give it a try.
The majority of web are in bilingual format. For those missing English,
I will get them updated with English.
A: Qiuming,
Director of Bilingual --
Thank you very much for your comments. For your first question, as our webmaster
has already responded to you, besides the Newsletter in English, we have a
bilingual Web session. I will post more issuers related to the bilingual
classes. For your second one, I send a copy of "greeting" to every students in
bilingual classes in the second week of the school. You are also able to read it
in our bilingual session in LCS web site. In the greeting, I asked whether we
should have a separate bilingual parent meeting or not. I am glad that at least
you are interested in it. We will have a bilingual parent meeting if more
parents want. If only a few parents like to have the meeting, we can still have
a small informal meeting. I would like to get more imports from parents. Please
let me know if you have any other questions.

2006-09-17 Q: In the weekly newsletter, both web links are the
same, to the Chinese News letter.
A: Thanks for the comment. The Chinese link was
intentional. The web is mainly a Chinese web. Thus I would like to present it in
Chinese. However, due to encoding complication
associated with emails, English is the sure way for everyone to be able to read
the notification. (The English newsletter is only a click
"Current Newsletter" away on the
newsletter page.) -- LCS Webmaster.
Notes (10-02): The Newsletter links
in the weekly bilingual email notification are pointing to its respective
language page as of 10-01. -- LCS Webmaster

Q: difference between the
Kindergarten classes the language classes and the bi-lingual classes?
A: Kindergarten &
regular Language classes are primary for kids with at least a parent who knows
mandarin Chinese and is able to help their kids on review & homework. It
is more
advance & fast pace than bilingual classes. Language classes are for students
in grade 1 to 9. Bilingual has 4 kindergarten
levels and grade one to four levels (compare to regular language classes).
Currently, we have a very wide age from 3 to 14 years old in 8 bilingual
classes. 3 & 5 year old are all in kindergarten.
We are teaching traditional Chinese in all classes. We also teaching
PinYin in the higher grades. I hope this helps
you to have a better understanding on our school system.
-- James Chuang,
Principal of LCS.
