LCS Curriculum for Bilingual Class

Guides for the curriculum
Bilingual classes
Curriculum (in brief)
Curriculum (in detail)
Guides
for the Curriculum
The curriculum is based on
the following guides:
More listening and speaking
Learning Chinese effectively
Followed by practicing, reviewing and
practicing
Emphasizing how much learned, not how much
taught
Enjoying Chinese language learning
Notes:
- More listening and
speaking: students should not only hear Chinese from their teachers, but also
from other students. In other words, encourage every student to speak more
Chinese in the classroom.
- Learning Chinese
effectively: teach the students based on the knowledge they have already
acquired in English or something that is easy for them to understand. Our
teaching strategy is to repeat same subjects from lower to higher graders, and
to constantly review and gradually teach more for each subject. When teaching
students to recognize Chinese characters, the teacher may tell an interesting
story behind the character, how the character was created, why the character
was written that way, or why the character is pronounced in this way, etc…
- Followed by practicing,
reviewing and practicing: emphasize practicing while learning followed by
reviewing and practicing students’ previously learned subjects. Encourage
every student to participate practicing in the classroom. Practicing in the
classroom can take place between the teacher and students, as well as between
a small group of students (see notes for “teaching students in
groups”). The purpose of students practicing in a small group is to increase
the opportunity for every student to participate in the classroom.
- Emphasizing how much
learned not how much taught: the teacher will decide how much he/she should
teach based on how much his/her students are able to learn. Teaching all
subjects listed in the curriculum for his/her grade is encouraged. However,
the teacher has to decide how much to teach for each subject in the
curriculum. For example, in the subject “My home” in B3, the teacher can
introduce 20 new words; nonetheless, he/she can also teach only 5 new words.
This guide is not only applied for different classes, but also for different
groups in the same class (see notes for “teaching students in groups”).
- Teaching students in
groups: the teacher should divide his/her students into different groups:
honors, core and bridging. Then, teacher should teach those different groups
accordingly. For example, when teaching “My home”, giving 20 new words to
students in the honors group, while 10 new words in the core group, and 5 new
words in the bridging group. While practicing in the classroom, students can
be divided into a small group with mixed levels or similar levels. In
the group with mixed levels, ask student(s) in the honors group to act as the
leader. In the group with similar levels, if you ask students in the bridging
group to respond to questions about a subject, then, may ask students in the
core group to orally describe the subject, and orally describe and write for
students in the honors group. The school may also consider extra help for
students in the bridging group, and extra activity for the honors group.
- Enjoying Chinese
language learning: the teacher should motivate students in learning to
appreciate Chinese.

organized based on information provided by LCS bilingual teachers (Debra Chang,
Emily Chao, Michell Chiu, Chui Han Chow, Ming Lee, Sandra Lee, and Jessie Tsai),
conversations with other LCS teachers (especially Ting-Ting Yeh and Yu-Wen
Wang), and the curriculum from Needham Public School. Thanks also to LCS student
Jessica Chu for her help.
This is only the 1st
version of the curriculum. We will continue to modify the curriculum to
maximally benefit our students. Any suggestion is welcome.
